The Drawing Society

The Drawing Society is the umbrella organisation which consists of two principal axes: the hotel axis that is the Drawing Hotels Collection, comprising the Drawing Hotel in Paris’s first arrondissement and the Drawing House in the 14th arrondissement, and an artistic axis which includes the contemporary drawing fair Drawing Now Art Fair, which will take place at Carreau du Temple from 21st to 24th March 2024, the philanthropic production and exhibition space Drawing Lab (located at 17, rue de Richelieu in Paris) and the cultural engineering centre Drawing on Demand. For nearly 20 years, the mother-daughter duo Christine Phal and Carine Tissot have helped to distribute and promote contemporary drawing, via a unique ecosystem that blends art and hospitality on a human scale. Deeply involved with the artists, they are also collectors who have made drawing a medium with no limits, visible everywhere from exhibition spaces to hotels.

Drawing Hotel

Drawing Now Paris

Drawing Now Paris, the first contemporary art fair dedicated to drawing in Europe, was created in 2007. Every year in March, it welcomes more than 70 international galleries selected by an independent committee. These galleries present more than 400 artists and nearly 2,000 works, representing the diversity of drawing from the last 50 years to the present. Collectors and art lovers are invited to discover the works of emerging and more established artists. The next edition will be held from 26th to 29th March 2026 at the Carreau du Temple in Paris.
The Printemps du Dessin, a national event that lasts until June, is launched on this occasion. It brings together drawing exhibitions held in institutions and art centres and all the activities such as workshops, workshops, conferences and meetings between artists and the public throughout France. Thus, the medium of drawing in all its forms allows the various publics to be closer to the artists and to creation.

Drawing Lab

Founded by Christine Phal in 2017 on a philanthropic model, the Drawing Lab is a private art centre entirely dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary drawing. By presenting 3 exhibitions a year, it aims above all to be a place for experimentation and production of drawing in all its forms, giving artists the opportunity to take drawing off the page and explore all its facets. In 2022, the Drawing Lab, supported by the Drawing Projects & Friends Association, is launching its €20,000 (excl. VAT) grant for the production and realisation of an exhibition. This annual call for projects is intended́ for a French artist/curator duo or one living in France. In addition to the production of exhibitions, the Drawing Lab ensures communication, dissemination, reception of the public, cultural mediation, publication of a catalogue and the organisation of satellite events for the exhibition.
Located on level -1 of the Drawing Hotel, the Drawing Lab is open every day free of charge. The purpose of the space is to ensure the dissemination of contemporary drawing to all audiences.

The Drawing Lab also hosts the exhibition of the winning artist of the Drawing Now Prize, awarded during the Drawing Now Art Fair. In 2022, the formula will evolve to give greater scope and visibility to the winning artist's practice and to establish this award as a grant for creation where the Drawing sphere - in particular Drawing Now Art Fair and the Drawing Lab - will join forces to offer: 5,000 euros in prize money, 10,000 euros in production aid, a 3-month exhibition at the Drawing Lab and the publication of a monographic catalogue.
